A group of Greenpeace activists managed Monday to enter a nuclear plant in France, confirmed the local police told AFP. In a press release, the organization announced that some of its members entered the plant at Nogent-sur-Seine, located about 95 km southeast of Paris, to "spread the message that there is no such thing as safe nuclear energy. "
Eight activists entered the station, said a French police source, who added that some of the protesters have been arrested.
"A group of militants managed to climb on the roof of one of the reactors, where he held a banner that says: No safe nuclear energy," said a Greenpeace spokesman, Axel Renaudin.
"The purpose of action was to show the vulnerability of French nuclear facilities and how easy it is to get to the heart of the reactor," said Sophia Majnoni, a Greenpeace nuclear expert.
She denounced a security audit conducted by the Government of nuclear power stations in Paris, saying it's "an exercise in communication not consider the risks already identified in the past and do not learn lessons from Fukushima", a Japanese nuclear plant been severely affected by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
Plant in Nogent-sur-Seine, operated by EDF, Greenpeace was chosen "because it is closest to Paris," said environmentalist organization.
